"Remember Tomorrow"While recording this issue I felt a strange sensation when I realized I wasn't doing much to create IT. Not that IT was happening so quick. Not that I was not challenging myself. The concept of sampling aboriginal recordings from LPs and then creating new music from these loops caused me to dive deep into my International record section. I called some friends to contribute and proceeded to put on and get into record after record for sense of where to begin. Then creating a nest of record player, ensoniq sampler, and 4-track I began layering african drums, then gregorian chants and then andean singing and so on.What I mean by not doing anything is that I didn't have to change the pitch of the sample once I aligned the tempos of the different samples. The pitches nestled into a common key or scale.Night after night of arranging and rearranging, the same results, an international(universal?) relationship--pitch to tempo.I ask you now to listen to some examples of the arrangements, as science experiments or art pieces.Remember Tomorrow [mp3s]track # 2track # 3track # 4March '04 Issue

"Deep Sandwich"[body saying things about how D.S. was recorded live at the Department of Safety with all these people like Alex, Flint, Meagan, Steve, Julian, Phil, Jay, and how Alex Mahan of Poison Dart sings this amazing song with backing orchestra recorded by just one microphone and how Phil Elvrum of Mt. Eerie recorded a song with horn section and celeste and two drumsets(as if real strange for Phil) and how, oh my god, Kelp! recorded Vancouver's most lovely quartet P:ano live at the Department of Safety at a super special show]here is P:ano live from the Department of Safety[mp3]here is Karl Blau singing a song by Joseph Haydn with Jailhouse Band( Steve Moore, Julian MacDonough, Alex Mahan )[mp3]February

"Purple Heart"Men On Love--uncovering that the heart is red and blue, Familia Wanderstaff, Nate Ashley, Amigo and The Gift Machine launch their own Cupidic arrows with bubble gum and suction cup tips. Eddy Blau's reeling pop sticks to the doors of your ventricles with brother Karl and Nick LaRue in Familia Wanderstaff's tracks. The lovely voice of Brian Malloy in Amigo here collaborates with Dave Matthies(the Gift Machine) and Karl Blau in three breathy tunes. The heart of Nate Ashley, known for devilish romance, actually bursts in his first of three songs, then in the 2nd he paints a portrait of his love with the bloody heart ink and in the third, he projects back before the vision of love to a time when he was waiting for that very moment. The Gift Machine(who is always singing of HIS love of HER) has this track that we may imagine the lovesinging of Dave goo-goo over her once more:Instrumental by the Gift Machine--mp3and here is the title track(mp3):Purple Heart by Familia Wanderstafflyrics and song by Eddy BlauLove by Familia Wanderstafflyrics and song by Karl and Eddy Blau

"Dunkel Blau"Conceptually, Dunkel Blau describes in sound the vibrations, for example, of the stillness of bare alder trees, the active imaginations of roots undereverywhere and the inevitable storms. Heavily imitating Adam Forkner's state of being, but in dark dolphin tones, also Mount Analog/Popol Vuh feelings.Dunkel Blau originally was to be portraits of winter scenes, but the unseen became more convincing audio-wise to portray. Here are two selections from a set of "four winter fantasies." Winter in its own slumber dreams of the other seasons.1. Fall2. Summer
